"‘Finding Trewyn Studio was a sort of magic’, Barbara Hepworth wrote of her St Ives studio. Halfway up a steep, cobbled hill, hidden above the heads of passers-by behind high retaining wall, Trewyn Studio and its garden seemed then, as now, a secret haven amongst the tightly-packed houses and crowded narrow streets of old St Ives … Though essentially a private space, this was not simply a back garden, nor even a working yard, but an essential part of Hepworth’s creative process and of the message she wished to convey with her sculpture. Hepworth’s garden helped to secure the association of her apparently abstract works with the natural world. Its exotic planting and location in West Cornwall, with its sub-tropical climate and clear light, served to link her to a Mediterranean sensibility that was in contrast to orthodox British culture.
